About MakeItMidi
MakeItMidi is a free, browser-based tool that turns audio files into MIDI notes. It exists because most "MP3 to MIDI" tools on the web either want you to sign up, upload your files to a server, or pay for a desktop DAW plugin. We wanted a version that just works, in your browser, with no account and no upload.
How it works
When you drop an audio file onto the page, your browser decodes it locally using the Web Audio API. The audio is analyzed frame-by-frame using a pitch-detection algorithm (YIN with parabolic interpolation) to estimate the dominant pitch at each moment. Adjacent frames with the same pitch are grouped into notes, and the result is written out as a Standard MIDI File (format 0) that you can download and open in any DAW or notation program.
No upload. The audio never leaves your device. You can verify this by opening the browser's network tab while converting — there are no outbound requests carrying your file.
What it does well
- Single melodic lines: vocals, lead instruments, monophonic synths, whistling, humming.
- Clean recordings where one note is clearly louder than everything else.
- Quick sketching: getting a rough melody into MIDI so you can edit it in your DAW.
What it doesn't do
- Polyphonic transcription (chords, full mixes, drum kits). This tool extracts one pitch at a time.
- Replace a careful manual transcription. It's a starting point, not a finished transcription.
- Separate instruments from a mix. If the melody is buried in background sound, expect messy output.
We deliberately do not publish an "accuracy percentage" because the result depends on your input. A clean recording of a single instrument can produce a very usable MIDI file; a busy pop mix will not.
Who it's for
- Musicians and producers who want a quick way to get a melody they hear into their DAW.
- Students learning transcription who want a reference to compare against.
- Anyone who just needs a rough MIDI sketch without installing software.
How the site is run
makeitmidi.com is an independent project. It is not affiliated with any audio software vendor, DAW manufacturer, or music platform. The site is free to use and is supported by unobtrusive advertising (Google AdSense). Advertising does not affect the conversion result — your files stay on your device either way.
The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. There is no backend server processing audio. There is no user account system. There is no newsletter.
What's next
We plan to add, over time:
- Adjustable sensitivity / silence threshold controls.
- Optional tempo and key hints to improve note grouping.
- Better handling of vibrato and pitch bends.
- More export options (MusicXML, individual track MIDI).
